HOW TO: DIY Birkenstocks

We’re all about giving a personal touch to the items you already have! With so many outside sources of influence for how we dress, customization is the key to setting your personal style apart. I love to add a vintage pin or brooch to my hats, but I had never thought about personalizing my footwear!

Here’s how I gave my Birkenstocks an upgrade during my time off in the Berkshires, using leftover items from our Make Your Own Charm event.

MATERIALS:


Your footwear of choice Colorful paracord Assorted beads	Scissors Lighter a little whimsy

1. Grab your Birks.

For this specific DIY we used the Birkenstock Boston Clog, but this would work any similar clog with openings for tying cord, or you could even add them to shoe laces!

2. Get some colorful paracord and matching beads for the vibe.

I had this assortment leftover after a Bag Charm event and thought they would be perfect for this DIY. We’re all about using materials you already have - so any shoe laces, cords, charms, etc. you have laying around will work and give your end product that perfectly-you vibe.

3. Tie your paracord through the strap.

You can tie a bow, simple knot, or get fancy with it - it’s your arts & crafts hour! I decided to use two different colors of cord on the same shoe for a little extra texture and fun.

4. Add beads to the ends of your cording.

Use simple pony beads with large holes to make sure they slid onto the cord easily. However many you add onto each cord is up to you! I went with an array of colors and added different amounts of beads to each cord to keep things interesting. A monochrome look here would be so cool also!

5. Tie off the ends of your cord.

Tie a nice, tight knot to make sure you’re not leaving a trail of beads behind as you walk. Cut off the excess and quickly flash with your lighter to melt together the ends of the cords to avoid fraying.
